Advantages and Disadvantages of Mind Mapping
Mind
mapping is a prevalent tool in many different fields including education and
project management. I have known that many of you have used mind mapping in
your work or study. What do you think of it? Some people have questioned
whether mind mapping is so good as it is propagandized.
Here’s
an analysis of advantages and disadvantages of mind mapping.
Advantages of the Mind Mapping
l Wide Adaptability
The
human brain works exactly the way how a mind map grows, thus allowing mind maps
to be used in many occasions involving learning and arrangement, such as
preparing an exam, taking notes, making a book summary, planning things and
organizing structured tasks, etc.
l Convenient Editing
Comparing
with traditional linear texts on notebooks, a mind map can theoretically
develop into unlimited branches and levels in the structure. For this reason,
it’s easy and convenient to add ideas and information at any time later.
l Enhance Memory
The
use of radiant structure, different colors, personalized images and symbols in
mind mapping aids in enhancing our memory and retention. The use of colors,
images, and keywords also help make learning more interesting and fun so you
become more motivated to remember important details.
l Get People Focused
Mind
mapping is a great way for us to categorize and organize the ideas we
brainstormed and identify their relationships. The structure of a mind map
helps us focus on the links and relationships between ideas, so we can get comprehensive
information instead of scattered facts.
l Concise Information
Since
the topic texts of mind maps are keywords and short phrases that can conclude
the content of the corresponding idea, mind maps are a great aid in condensing
plenty of information. And we also can insert notes, tags, comments,
attachments, and hyperlinks to add more information without displaying them.
Disadvantages of the Mind Mapping
l
Time-consuming
(Sometimes)
If we need to make a delicate mind map with
excellent pictures and accompanying texts, it may take some time.
l
Difficult
for other people to understand
Mind maps provide a self-explanatory
information and structure that can be understood best by the person who took
part in making it. So it might be a little difficult for other people who did
not witness the activity to make complete sense out of the mind map.
Welcome to share your experiences about using
mind mapping. Does it bring benefits to you? Or do you face any problems when
you use it?

Jialu,
ReplyDeleteGreat topic of discussion! I am a huge fan of mind mapping and as you mentioned many use it in their works or study, and I am no different. There have been instances where I have used mind mapping as a tool to bring together my team, talk through situations, needs, wants, expectations, and even create plans of action and something as simple (but important) as a resource list. In the article you shared I looked at the "disadvantages" and only seen two listed, and of those listed their arguments for being classified as a "disadvantage" are not very convincing. Yes it can take sometime, but in my experience that time spent in preparation saves a ton of heartache and wasted time down the road. The second was "difficult for other people to understand" maybe some truth to that, but if done with members of a group, who all understand the design, concept, and purpose behind the mind mapping this eliminates that complaint. Thanks for sharing this blog, I am a fan of this technique.
Erric
Hi Erric,
DeleteThanks for your reply. You are right, as long as we don't spend too much time on aesthetics, mind mapping is a tool that allows us to improve efficiency.
Jialu
Jialu,
ReplyDeleteI have spent a reasonable amount of time trying to explain “how to think” to very driven and focus oriented learners. In other words, these learners were old and stuck in their traditional ways. I highly encouraged mind mapping before, during, and after all collaborative projects and outcome based assessments.
Mind mapping before major events yields the more well-known advantages. Usually I saw students buy in to mind mapping process prior to assessments simply because the practice organized thoughts, concepts, and theories. This organization enabled the internalization of information. This information which was later transformed to trusted knowledge during the assessed event.
The hardest sell was refining the mind map after an assessment. To me, after action reviews and retrospect further transform trusted knowledge into attitude evolution. Most adults simply want to pass a test or finish a task rather develop or create.
Matt
Hi Matt,
DeleteThanks for your reply and sharing your own experiences. I think you have an excellent teaching style. Mind mapping can change the way people think, but it is a long and hard process, especially for people who already have thinking set.
Jialu
Jialu,
ReplyDeleteMap mapping can be a great tool to get started on a project. I use mind mapping when I am stuck on how to start a project or break writer's block. It helps me just start putting things on paper. Some of it makes sense some of it might not but it gets my brain doing something besides sitting there thinking about how to get started.
Can it be time-consuming, maybe? Again, just thinking about thinking doesn’t always work. Sometimes doing different things can unblock your mind and get the creative juices flowing. I agree it can be difficult for other people to understand but once you get things on paper and information starts flowing then you can put them in chronological order that makes sense.
Mark
Hi Mark,
DeleteThanks for your reply. You are very good at using mind mapping. Inspiration always comes from a moment, and the benefit of mind mapping is that it is possible to capture it.
Jialu
Hello Jialu,
ReplyDeleteI like the analysis on the advantages and disadvantages of mind mapping. In the IDD&E program, like you, we are both very green in this field. There are many assignments required well-organization, well-design. We have been told so many new things in the last four weeks, mind mapping is a great way to manage our ideas, thoughts to reach the final learning objectives. Well done, and keep moving on!
Yang
Hi Yang,
DeleteYou are right. When things are messy, I prefer to making a list to show everything to do. The mind mapping is another tool that makes my ideas organized. Thanks for your reply!
Jialu
Yialu,
ReplyDeleteGreat post. I have used Mind Mapping on a few occasions and found it very helpful. I can definitely see some potential uses for Mind Mapping in the IDDE field. I took a look at the link in your post, "Benefit From the Mind Mapping Concept", very interesting article. I like the way it describes the advantages of Mind Mapping, it seems like to me that Mind Mapping is a visual representation of a Brainstorm. Thanks, looking forward to reading more of your posts.
Craig
Hi Craig,
DeleteAs you mentioned, mind mapping is a visual representation of a Brainstorm. Besides, mind mapping can also be used to take notes and manage projects. Thanks for your reply and stay tuned.
